Figma
A dedicated library for users to track of the games they have played, will play, want to play, and are currently playing.
Easy to leave reviews allow users to quickly share and explore experiences with games.
A dedicated social page will allow users to easily connect with one another and view important highlights from their peers.
A big focus on organization and community allows users to quickly organize and share their thoughts on video games.
5 users between the ages of 18- 36 who spend a large amount of time playing video games were asked to discuss their process with researching games and related reviews.
This age range was important because this is how old a vast majority of gamers are. Questions were tailored to ask their methods for searching for reviews, tracking their gaming history, and viewing gaming media.
Based on the research gathered from the Interviews, it was important to focus on some themes that seemed important for the product's success.
It was important to discover what current solutions in the market excel at and could use improvements in. I analyzed the features of three potential competitors found.
Based on the information gathered so far from users, I was able to paint a picture of what the target user looks like for this product.
Due to the heavy smartphone usage by the interviewed users and users in the United States alone, it would be very beneficial to a large number of gamers to be able to utilize this service on their mobile device.
Make a dedicated page for social features and a welcoming home page that delivers feedback to users about what is going on.
We can create quick and easy ways to add games to the library and section them off.
We can provide a clear path to finding the reviews from each page for respective games.
Later research showed that users appreciate a home screen that can display quick and interesting information.
A page dedicated to the categorization of the users gaming library.
An easy to follow sign up process in order to allow users to access the social and library aspects of the app.
A page dedicated to keeping track of friends and their progress.
A section for users to use in order to search for a specific title.
A personable profile page where users can showcase their desired achievements or libraries.
Users were happy with the navigation, but felt the layout could use some improvements on the home screen and library page. Also, adding a bit more ‘fun’ to the home screen was a desired feature as well.
What I learned...
I was able to learn that gamers really value being able to organize the games they have as it helps them stay focused and gives them a means to relate to others.
This was my first mobile app project that required me to start from acquiring research and then finishing off with the design of the UI. I was able to practice manipulating color in order to create a cohesive look, but also make an interface that one can look at for extended periods of time. Even though there was an attraction to using a lot of color for a gaming related app, it was important to apply methods of good design in order to make an appealing experience.
Having to consider many aspects of the apps necessary features was an important rule to learn. Being required to consider even the onboarding process in terms of possible user frustration was important.
I was also able to learn how to implement the Double Diamond framework into the entire design process. This helped me stay organized and helped me be able to narrow down any broad sets of information to pin down a more simple solution.
In the Future
- I would like to ask another designers opinion on my current work
- Addressing the concerns of more users might provide new insights
- Further test the fluiditiy of the user flow
- It would be important to understand if the app contains enough motivation for users.
